TALK BY AIR MARSHAL G A 'BLACK' ROBERTSON
Thursday 9th November 6:30pm
OWEN HARDY TALK
Owen Hardy – the Last New Zealand Ace, with Air Marshal ‘Black’ Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd)
Air Marshal Black Robertson pays a welcome return for a talk about Wg Cdr Owen Hardy DFC* AFC, the subject of his latest book: From Spitfires to Vampires and Beyond. Hardy was probably the last New Zealand ace to tell his story. A teenager when he joined his first Spitfire squadron in 1942, flying and war in the air came easily to him – not so civilian life in post-war New Zealand. After a brief hiatus, he rejoined the RAF for the second phase of a remarkable career. It eventually took him from the excitement of jet fighters and display flying to the drudgery of staff work. In his talk, Black shines a light not just on what it was like to fly in combat, but also on the changing face of a latter-day RAF that arguably undervalued some of its heroes. It’s an enthralling and revealing tale.
Air Marshal Black Robertson CBE BA FRAeS FRSA RAF (Retd)
‘Black’ Robertson joined the RAF in 1963, instantly acquiring the nickname that’s remained with him ever since. After 3 years at the RAF College, Cranwell, he spent the next 33 in flying, staff and command appointments, including tours of duty in the Middle East, USA, Germany and the Falkands. He flew all the RAF’s front line fast jet aircraft and also qualified as a helicopter pilot. After retiring he spent some 5 years with BAE Systems before establishing his own consultancy. A past Clerk to The Honourable Company of Gloucestershire, trustee of the David Vaisey Library Awards and Cranfield Trust mentor, his time is now devoted mainly to writing and lecturing: www.blackrobertson.com.

July Newsletter
Many thanks to the large number of members that took the time to complete our recent survey for which the results were largely extremely positive. We are addressing the areas of the feedback that were not as you had hoped.
There were mixed feelings regarding members events so we have made the decision to continue with them and try to entice a few more of you to attend. Please refer to our CALENDAR on our website for our up-coming events.
Summer Opening Hours
During the summer months, Bridges Place was often closed for a period of time in the past. However, we have made the decision to remain open with reduced hours. We will close on Saturdays, unless we have pre arranged reservations or enquiries of 8 or more.
We will also close early on days where we have no reservations so we encourage you all to book in advance even if you are just heading in for a drink or two. BOOK HERE
Menu
We have made changes to our menu in July with some variations and more seasonal options and our August menu (below) also reflects the same new dishes. There will also be some lunchtime specials available at a very affordable price!
Much as we aim to cater for many of the dietary requirements within our menus, there are times that we don’t. In these circumstances, please send an email ahead or ask a member of our staff when you arrive as our chefs are usually able to create a dish with ingredients that are agreeable to you or your guest/s.
New Members
Our current list is at a stage where we are encouraging new members to apply. Whilst we do not wish to advertise for members, in order to maintain the unique atmosphere of Brydges Place we are asking for existing members to propose those that you may think would enjoy our hospitality and quirkiness.
You can ask your friends, family and colleagues to complete an online application form on our WEBSITE, or you can come along to our special ‘Introduce a New Member Evening’ on Tuesday 22nd August between 5:30pm and 7:30pm for drinks and canapés. There are incentives for members who introduce new members who sign up during August and September. Further details are available ONLINE.
Members End Of Summer Drinks
Members are also invited to attend our Drinks reception on Thursday 14th September between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. Come and enjoy an evening of music, drinks and canapés. Further details, and RSVP details are available HERE and we suggest that you reserve a table if you are thinking of staying on for a meal after the reception.

CHANDOS LOUNGE UPDATE
Dear valued members,
We want to advise you that, due to rising overheads, we are relaunching the Chandos Lounge (ground floor) and opening it up to a ‘Chandos Membership’.
The Chandos membership allows entry via 49 Chandos Place only and will be open daily and evenings for specific events. As a member of Brydges Place, however, you will still have access via the door from 2 Brydges Place.
In order to prevent Chandos members flowing into Brydges Place Club we will be installing a keypad on the door between the entrance hall of Brydges Place and the stairs to the rest rooms and advising Brydges Place members of the code for access.
We are mindful of the importance of maintaining the unique feel of Brydges Place Club but the ground floor is under utilised. This is a way in which we can make a better use of the whole building without affecting your membership of Brydges Place.
Kindest regards,
Nick, John and Jackie

Covid-19 Update
After the government’s latest announcement, we're delighted to be planning to gradually introduce some club evenings and functions.
With the removal of mandatory government restrictions from tomorrow, we'll continue to put the safety of you and our team first. This will allow us to keep our doors open so you can continue to enjoy the things you love.
We've decided not to remove all control measures at once. Instead, we will balance releasing our restrictions with our duty to protect you and our team.
Masks and social distancing
From 19 July, we will continue to ask members to wear a face covering whilst moving around the club as a common courtesy to all who frequent Brydges Place. Similarly, we ask that you respect distance between our other members to make social distancing possible for those who want it.
Our team will continue to wear masks around club to keep you and our other team members safe.
Sanitising
We also ask you to make use of the hand Sanitising dispensers which are situated on each level. We will continue to wipe down surfaces and equipment regularly to keep our club safe and COVID-19 secure.
Thank you!
Thank you for your continued support and playing your part to reduce the risk of COVID-19 in our club.
If you feel we're not moving back to normality quickly enough, we ask you to bear with us whilst we navigate this recovery steadily, properly and safely. We cannot wait to return to business as usual.
We look forward to seeing you soon!

Special request to Members regarding bookings.
Whilst the footfall in London, and in particular at Brydges Place is quiet, we respectfully ask Members to Book in advance by EMAIL, ONLINE or by calling us on 0207 240 7659.
We continue to staff the club according to bookings and will close for the periods for which we have no bookings so we would hate for you to arrive and find that we have closed, or find that we are unable to accommodate you. As we are sure you will appreciate, we are striving to maintain the special feel of Brydges Place but the pressures of the past 15 or so months require us to operate in an economically efficient way.
Also, we are asking members who may know people who would appreciate Brydges Place and be interested in becoming a new member please contact Jackie by email or calling her directly. [email protected] or 07754 862898.
Best wishes to you all,
Nick & John

Looking forward… Since reopening, it has been heartening to have seen so many of you returning and also welcoming a good number of new faces (unmasked whilst seated, of course)! We were delighted to go ahead with our Mid-Summer Drinks and to meet many of you and listen to your ideas which we are looking at how and if we can implement these suggestions. During these evenings we were entertained by the very talented musicians form Trinity, Kobe Ngugi and Danny Piers. For our July Sunday Lunch, we were lucky to welcome the successful Jack Tyson-Charles playing for us all. Jack is returning again this month. In September, Air Marshal G A "Black" Robertson will present a talk to celebrate Battle of Britain Day. More details to follow. As restrictions are eased, we will be introducing more events which will be updated on our EVENTS CALENDAR including the introduction of Club Suppers. |

New Logo for Brydges Place!
Some of you may have noticed our new logo….. To give you some background, during lockdown we researched the history of the area and our logo has been adapted from the Arms of the 1st Duke of Chandos, James Brydges (1673-1744). James Brydges was an English nobleman and politician who sat in the House of Commons and House of Lords. He was patron of the composer Handel who wrote the Chandos Anthems. |
Midsummer Drinks
Provided Covid-19 restrictions are lifted on 21st June as predicted, we invite you to come in and enjoy a drink with us on the newly refurbished ground floor. The evening is to thank you for your continued support and is an opportunity to meet us and other Members. It will be a ‘Drop in’ event from 5.30pm to 7.30pm on each evening from 23rd to 25th June. Please reserve a table if you wish to dine with us afterwards. |
Chandos Evenings
We are launching ‘Chandos Evenings’ which will be held on the newly refurbished ground floor. The evenings will be varied and embrace a variety of themes. If any members can suggest musicians, vocalists, comedians, ‘an evening with……’ (the list is endless!) we will look at ways we can make the evenings a success. This would be a great opportunity for up-and-coming performers to practice their art in a small, intimate environment.

Brydges Place Members Dinners Again, subject to the easing of restrictions, we will be holding monthly Members Dinners over the summer and autumn. This would be held in the Green Room giving you the chance to meet with other members socially or for a networking opportunity. There will be a set menu and for 6 to 10 members on each occasion. More details to follow soon. |
NEW MEMBER SUGGESTIONS
Due to the pandemic, our membership has reduced as people’s working lives have been affected or some have moved out of town and do not anticipate visiting Brydges Place as frequently. As a result, we are inviting nominations for new Members from existing Members. We want ‘Your’ club to thrive and retain its special ambiance! Ask prospective members to complete the New Membership Application form by following the link on our webpage.

Dear Members,
Please forgive the quiet spell as we were loathed to be over enthusiastic about reopening on 17th May only to have our hopes dashed once again!
We can now confirm that (subject to government guidelines) we will be opening our doors on 17th May and already have bookings through until December so we want to thank you all for your bookings, kind messages and continued support!
During this period we have finally secured a licence for the ground floor and have opened up the area to make it more spacious and comfortable with the option of accommodating larger parties when we are able. We are making the finishing touches and will put some photographs on the website once its finished as we hope to entice you and your guests to come in for a glass of wine, a cocktail, or something more fizzy!
We are also working on menus and will circulate these in due course.
Please do contact us and make a booking or two.
Best wishes,
Nick, John, Jackie and the entire Brydges Place family

Following the recent Government announcement regarding the way forward with Covid-19, we are delighted to confirm that, providing there are no national setbacks, we will be opening again on Monday 17th May 2021! The current advice is that there will be a rule in place of 6 people dining together, but the even better news is that once we get to 21st June, the limit will have been removed. Fingers crossed……! Whilst in lockdown, we have been busy making a few adjustments within the Club to ensure there is maximum space for everyone to feel comfortable when moving around. We have also opened up the ground floor by re-positioning the bar. This will enable us to offer more space with a relaxed seating area for all members to take advantage of. Once this area is complete, further information and photographs of the space will be published on the member’s page of our website. We have already started taking advanced bookings from 17th May, so if you would like to get your booking in early, please do contact us on [email protected] or give us a call on 0207 240 7659 and leave a message – we will get back to you as soon as possible to confirm your booking. |

Due to the announcement by the Government yesterday that London will move into Tier 3 as of midnight tonight we are once again forced to close our doors. As a result, we will have had to cancel all reservations and we are hugely disappointed that we are unable to host the many traditional festivities. We appreciate the support that so many of you have shown us particularly when we are not the only ones suffering at the moment. We would like to take this opportunity wish everyone of you merriment throughout the festive season and look forward to seeing you in 2021 when we are able to open our doors once again with renewed verve! With very best wishes and seasons greetings, Nick, John, Jackie and the entire Brydges Place family |

Whilst we are in the middle of Lockdown 2.0, we are preparing to reopen as soon as we are able (hopefully 3rd December). Christmas menus are being worked on and decorations are springing up around the club. We trust that you are all staying safe and well and very much hope to see as many of you as possible prior to Christmas. |

The current situation
Following the government’s decision to bring London into the Tier 2 category of Covid regulations (which you can found here ), we are constantly reviewing our operation in order to sustain buoyancy. First of all, we are still open! Our protocols are in place and we will be adhering to them as rigidly as we are able. If you would like to see our Risk Assessment, please check our webpage. As a member, we already have your contact details. When we are taking a booking from you, we will assume that your booking follows current government guidelines. Tables are to be for a maximum of 6 people. As we have said before, booking in advance is absolutely vital so we can manage numbers and staff accordingly. We also request that all members and their accompanying guests should wear masks when entering the Club and moving around. Once sitting at the table, masks can be removed but we would ask you to wear them if visiting the WC or moving through the premises for any other reason. Moving Forward We will honour all the remaining bookings we have for this week (although there are no longer many of them!). However, as from next Monday (26th October), we need to ensure that the Club remains in a viable state and we can no longer open up for just one booking of two people. We need to have a minimum of six people in (be it two tables of three or three tables of two, or indeed individuals or a group of up to 6) for us to do this. Booking in advance allows us to set appropriate levels of staffing accordingly so we do appreciate you booking ahead. Also, in an effort to accommodate all those who are working during the week and are only able to visit us at weekends, we are proposing to open on Saturdays and for Sunday lunch too – again subject to bookings. We really hope you are still able to support us during this very uncertain time. We will be doing our very best to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. Kind regards and best wishes Nick & John |

Sunday Lunch
We are pleased to inform you that we will be opening on the first Sunday of October (4th) and November (1st) for Sunday lunch bookings in advance and hope that you would take advantage of this and support Brydges Place. It’s also an opportunity to meet with family and friends at the same time. (Menu on left) During these ever changing times, we will continue to strictly follow current government guidelines and adapt as and when required. Looking forward to welcoming those of you who haven't, as yet, visited us. We fully appreciate that some members are not visiting London due to self-isolating, or that your work in town has ground to a halt! We wish all members well and that you continue to stay safe. |
10/09/20
As the latest government announcement regarding Covid-19 to reduce maximum gatherings from 30 to 6 from 14th September, our offer of private parties to a maximum of 30 over weekends sadly has to be withdrawn. Although proved very popular, only the bookings made for this weekend will be honoured. The “hot desk” option is still available on the ground floor for those who require it. Please ensure you book in advance. Also from 14th September, Brydges Place alleyway will be closed from St Martins Lane for approximately 3 days. Please be sure to come in from Bedfordbury (behind the Marquis Pub). We have a new menu available, keeping the most popular selections from August menu and introducing the most requested from previous times. Please find menu attached. We are beginning to pick up slowly as members are more confident to visit the West End. Thanking you all for your support and look forward to seeing you soon. |

Private Use of the Club – Saturdays and Sundays
We would like to let you all know that the Club will now be available for private parties of between 10 – 30 people on either a Saturday evening or Sunday lunchtime.
During the last few months, you may have had to forego some socialising with family and friends, but we are now offering the use of the Club to all members for private gatherings in a quiet environment. If we have bookings for 2 smaller groups at the same time, we can split them into first and second floors, but if there is a booking for up to 30 people, we can use both floors to enable social distancing where necessary.
Obviously, these gatherings will have to be booked in advance so please let us know if you would like to take up this offer and take the burden off the chef in your family – let us do it for you! Give us a call on 0207 240 7659 to discuss options.
Hot Desk
Also, as from tomorrow (Tuesday 25th August) and through September, we will open up the ground floor area to allow members to “hot desk” on Tuesday to Thursday each week. We will have six separate tables available using social distancing guidelines for members to book in advance to allow you to work, hold a meeting (2 people per table maximum) or just to relax. There will be complimentary tea, coffee and water available for you to help yourselves to but the area will not be serviced as such so no food orders will be taken. We will, of course, clean everything thoroughly after a table has been vacated, but we do ask you to take responsibility for following the Covid-19 guidelines to enable us to adhere to them. To reserve a space please either call 0207 240 7659 or email [email protected] .

Having originally been turned down when we applied to join this scheme due to the type of business we were seen as, we have now received confirmation that we are able to participate in this scheme! Better late than never we think is the response here! Well, we have one week left of the scheme so if any of you would like to bring along some guests to take advantage of this offer, we would be more than happy to welcome you. Please call us on 0207 240 7659 to reserve a table next week. We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the Club. |

We're Back!
We are so extremely happy to be able to welcome our valued members into Brydges Place after such a long break. Graeme and Isla are currently heading the front of house and will continue to look after you whilst our long standing chefs, Andres and Guillermo are already producing some delicious dishes from our revised menu. We have a smaller menu during our 'soft' relaunch but can assure you that we will do everything possible to cater for every palate and dietary requirement, so please let us know when booking if you have a special request. We are delighted to have had such great feedback so far! We are taking reservations in advance from 12:30-19:30 from Monday to Friday and will review these times as we, and London get busier. So many of our members are involved with theatre and the arts, and we are eager to support all efforts to revive this much missed and integral part of our lives. Please let us know if there are any initiative that would benefit from our support. In the meantime stay safe, but please visit us when you can. Nick, John, Jackie, Graeme, Isla, Andres and Guillermo (The Brydges Place Team) |
